Feature Spread Blog Post #1
This is my Feature Spread for my magazine (2 pages put together). I used certain techniques to create meaning, and that meaning is unification (the bond shared by these two lovers in the spread.)
To commence, for the main image, I wanted to make a drawing of both artists from the cover together in a picture. However, I also didn't want to draw a picture of them which was taken from far away (medium shot/long shot), so I decided I was either going to do an extreme close up image or a normal close up image. Ultimately, I decided the latter option (normal close up) would make the most sense, since it would capture the artists' faces as well as just a portion of their torso.
In the picture, I wanted to get one where both artists were smiling and perhaps holding each other in some way (holding hands, etc.). My aim was to portray to my audience (the viewers/readers of my magazine) the joyfulness of both Anuel AA (right) and Karol G (left). In my feature spread drawing, not only are they smiling, but Anuel AA has his arms around his girlfriend, Karol G. Again, this portrays unification and the bond that they both share, considering the publication date for my magazine is in February, a few days after Valentine's Day, so that just adds even more meaning to it in that sense. For the drawing, I wanted it to be as centered as possible (both subjects centered rather than on one page) because it creates a more static image, which is one of the codes & conventions from the Rolling Stone magazines that I researched.
I researched 3 different Rolling Stone magazines. These are the feature spreads of the ones I researched:
This is the Rolling Stone magazine with Jack White on the cover and also continues onto this feature spread.
This is the Rolling Stone magazine with Donald Trump on the cover and also on the feature spread.
This is the Rolling Stone magazine with Justin Trudeau on the cover. The feature spread is not a continuation of the cover, as is with the other two magazines that I researched. Instead, it is of singer Khalid.
For the most part, when researching Rolling Stone, I noticed most feature spreads were continuations of the cover. Therefore, when creating my own magazine, I made sure I incorporated this code/convention into the creative process for my feature spread. This meant that at the same time that I was working on the cover of my magazine, I also had to plan for the feature spread all in one.
My feature spread resembles most the Khalid feature spread. The white background of the Khalid feature spread, for instance, was a code/convention I incorporated into my magazine, as well as the article placement (title of article on one page, article on the other page). Not only that, but also the fact that my drawing goes into the two pages (spread), just like the Khalid picture on his feature spread. This shows my research into not only other magazines and articles, but also the branding.
